Feast of The Holy Innocents, Martyrs

Matthew 2:13-18
When the magi had departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. Herod is going to search for the child to destroy him." Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt. He stayed there until the death of Herod, that what the Lord had said through the prophet might be fulfilled, Out of Egypt I called my son.

When Herod realized that he had been deceived by the magi, he became furious. He ordered the massacre of all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had ascertained from the magi. Then was fulfilled what had been said through Jeremiah the prophet:

A voice was heard in Ramah,
sobbing and loud lamentation;
Rachel weeping for her children,
and she would not be consoled,
since they were no more.

Today on this feast day of the Holy Innocents it is hard to put yourself back "in time" to think about why, how it happened. To read & hear about Herod's hatred or fear  of a child, a baby... and the slaughter, the massacre of helpless children, human lives. And yet it still happens today in our world, our time. We permit it to happen by denying the gift of life God has blessed us with by taking life in our own hands or even permitting death, encouraging the death of innocent children via abortion. The number killed at Herod's command are few as compared to the innocent slaughtered, killed by abortion. In our country, 1.2 million babies are killed every year.(National Right to Life)

Our Church teaches about this in the Catechism of the Catholic Church;

Human life must be respected and protected absolutely from the moment of conception. From the first moment of his existence, a human being must be recognized as having the rights of a person—among which is the inviolable right of every innocent being to life.72 (1703, 357)
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you.73 (CCC 2270)
God, the Lord of life, has entrusted to men the noble mission of safeguarding life, and men must carry it out in a manner worthy of themselves. Life must be protected with the utmost care from the moment of conception: abortion and infanticide are abominable crimes. (CCC 2271)

Today I pray for those children who have been killed due to abortion. I pray for their mothers, fathers, families and anyone who assisted and/or cooperated in the abortion of a child. I pray that the healing mercy and grace of God may be upon them.

Prayer for the Unborn
Heavenly Father, in Your love for us, protect against the wickedness of the devil, those helpless little ones to whom You have given the gift of life.

Touch with pity the hearts of those women with child in our world today who are not thinking of motherhood.

Help them to see that the child they carry is made in Your image - as well as theirs - made for eternal life.

Dispel their fear and selfishness and give them true womanly hearts to love their babies and give them birth and all the needed care that a mother alone can give.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, Your Son, Our Lord, Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.
